Most Air Conditioning Systems Can Be Fixed for Less Than $10

We provide you with the basics to get you comfortable again.  Use our guide to fix your air conditioning system yourself.  We list the most common problems with it comes to repairing your a/c unit yourself.  A lot of air conditioning issues come from lack of maintenance.  Remember when fixing your air conditioning unit yourself always think safety first.  If it’s out of your skill set you might want to just call a pro.  It’s simple to get electrocuted and hurt by a moving part if you don’t know what you’re doing when fixing your air conditioning unit on your own.

 Before You Start: 

  • Please use common sense. Work to your ability.  An Air Conditioning system is can be very dangerous under the covers.
  • If you don’t know enough about the moving parts or the terms I’m using, repairing might best be done by a professional.
  • Always check twice if you’re turning on the power or turning it off. 
  • Its very simple to forget if you turned off your air conditioning unit or turned it back on and get shocked (its happened to me).
  • Remember what you did, so if you do need to call out a qualified air conditioning repair contractor you can lead him in the right direction.
  • I have come across plenty of home owners that wanted to “D.I.Y.” and made more problems that existed in the first place.

  • Replace the filter, a clogged filter can cause cooling issues to your air conditioning unit.
  • The filter will be located at the furnace in the attic or closet and / or in the hallway.  Some times people forget to add on.
  • You should change the filter at least twice a year.
  • We can do this for you. 

  • If you have an old thermostat with no batteries make sure you hear the click when you turn it on. If you hear no click you may need a new.
  • If you have a digital thermostat you should replace the batteries
  • If you replace the batteries or can't install new ones and the thermostat is blank, check the power or replace the thermostat.

  • Check the duct work in the attic or in the basement. 
  • Having clogged duct work or broken duct work can cause a lot of issues.
  • You can fix small tares with duct tape.

  • Make sure you have power to the furnace, without power to the furnace you wont have air blowing throughout your home or office.
  • Without power to the furnace, your air conditioning will not recive the signal to turn on.
  • Make sure your outlet has power, you can check this by plugging in a small electronic device like a phone charger.
  • If there is no power coming out of your outlet reset your breakers at the power panel and check for power again.

  • Use the thermostat to turn on the air conditioning system
  • Go to the air conditioning unit and see if it turns on.
  • If it doesn't turn on, check the fuses.
  • The fuses are found on the wall inside a 4"x10" box usually. 
  • You can replace the fuses for less than $10.

We Can Do The Hard Stuff For You

  • If you replaced the fuses at the condenser,  you check the main power panel.
  • Find the A/C breaker inside the main power panel.
  • If its not listed, most A/C unit use more then 30 AMPS breakers.
  • Reset the breaker by turning it off and on.

  • If the unit is turning on but not cooling try washing down the condenser.
  • A dirty condenser can cause major problems to the air conditioning system.
  • Turn the unit off first.
  • Get the water hose and rinse off the entire unit except for the electrical. 
  • Turn the unit back on and see if it makes a difference.
